Dedicated research projects in South Africa are attempting to unravel the mystery of how ‘elite controllers’ suppress HIV infection. Scientists at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and South African Medical Research Council are not only driving the search for a cure for HIV but also elucidating the genomes of under-studied African populations in general.
