Artists Surviving COVID 19

Our producer, Carina Bruwer has also been a performing artist for more than 20 years. She founded South Africa’s award-winning instrumental supergroup, Sterling EQ, and ran an online agency for artists. When the COVID 19 lockdown happened, performing artists were among the hardest hit. Carina heard first-hand accounts of people having to sell things in order to survive.  She was inspired to do a documentary that explored the different ways artist innovated during the lockdown in order to survive  –  to hear about the challenges they faced, and how they overcame them.  She then approached director, Warren Mac Carthy to apply to the DASC for funding – which was approved!  They supplied 20% of the budget (R75,000) – enough to get us going, and we’re grateful for the opportunity. The rest of the funding will come from Seed Media and ‘sweat equity’.
